General Why did Jesus order his Apostles to arm themselves?

The reason becomes clear when you read the prophecy Jesus himself quotes from in Luke 22:37:

“For the time has come for this prophecy about me to be fulfilled:
‘He was counted among the rebels.’ (Isa 53.12)
Yes, everything written about me by the prophets will come true.”

The purpose for having two of his disciples carry swords was not so they could defend him but simply to fulfill this prophecy.

As Jesus himself later confirms in Luke 22:52:

"Why do you come out with swords and clubs and treat me like a criminal?"

To continue to use this story to argue that Christians should not only arm themselves but kill, is to misunderstand the point made by Jesus.

Matthew Henry:

“This is intended only to show that the times would be very perilous, so that no man would think himself safe if he had not a sword by his side. But the sword of the Spirit is the sword which the disciples of Christ must furnish themselves with.”

More good notes from the NET Bible:
Luke 22.38 "Here are two swords."
The disciples mistakenly took Jesus to mean that they should prepare for armed resistance, something he will have to correct in 22:50-51.

"It is enough"
The disciples’ misunderstanding caused Jesus to terminate the discussion.
