The Ten Commandments are the heart and core of the the old covenant law. They were stored in a box called the ark of the covenant. In these Ten Commandments were the statues, the thou shalt nots, but they never said a thing about what would happen to those who broke them. The judgements were written by Moses in a book called the law of Moses and in these were listed the punishments for those who violated the statutes. Also in the law of Moses were the works of the law, the sacrifices and offerings . The sacrificial system demanded sacrifices daily, weekly, monthly and annually. The daily were offered evening and morning, the weekly on the Sabbath, the monthly on the new moons and the yearly on the seven appointed feasts; first day of unleavened bread, last day of unleavened bread, Pentecost, Trumpets, Atonement, first day of Tabernacles and the last great day. The only reason for all of these appointed times were to offer sacrifices. All of this was symbolic, only a shadow, not having any substance. Nothing contained in the old covenant provided salvation else there would have been no need for a new covenant. Only in the new covenant are the gifts of YAHWEH made available that lead to salvation. The old covenant condemns all to death because of sin. Only the new makes a way , a new and living way to escape the old covenant, however there was a price that the law demanded, the death of a righteous man. Jesus was the only righteous man who ever lived and if he was willing to give his life as a sacrifice for payment to to law then all who believed in him would be covered by his sacrifice and Passover from the old covenant into the new covenant.
Jesus had no need to abolish the old covenant because his covenant was totally different. The carnal world is yet under the old covenant and condemned to death. This old covenant was designed by YAHWEH to lead people to Christ by showing them their sins and their total inability to keep the law thus showing them the need of a savior.
Rather than work yourself to death under a law you can never fulfill repent and admit your failure to YAHWEH and if it is YAHWEHS will for you at that time become a true Christian. The intent of the Ten Commandments was summed up by Jesus as love, GODLY love, that Paul said fulfills the law. If you truly love GOD and your neighbor you will never break any law, love does no harm. The Ten Commandments did not give this GODLY love because it is a gift of the Holy Spirit. The law demanded from humanity something they could not do and this is because of the deception of Eve in the garden of Eden when she thought she could be like GOD to know good and evil. The forbidden fruit gave her and Adam this knowledge but not the ability to always do good and never do evil. This means that even though they had knowledge they could not control it and would sin and therefore die. Later YAHWEH gave the Ten Commandments to Israel that defined what sin is but gave no remedy for it. Under the new covenant in Christ sin has a new definition; whatever is not of the love of GOD is sin. Only GODS love can conquer sin and death. A person trying to keep the Ten Commandments is dead but the one keeping the two greatest commandments of Christ is alive. The letter kills, only the spirit gives life.
