If you study the biblical history of Israel, king David United the tribes into a single nation. Under Solomon the nation of Israel became the greatest nation on earth. Due to Solomons sin GOD would divide the nation under the rule of his son Rehoboam . There were ten tribes called Israel in the north and three tribes in the south called Judah. This division was never healed. The ten northern tribes disappeared from history while the nation called Judah was after 70 years in Babylon led by Ezra and Nehemiah back to their lands. This means that the nation today calling themselves Israel is in reality Judah. The Israel of GOD is called by James, the twelve tribes scattered abroad. The ancient nation of Israel was GODS elect under the law, the Israel of GOD is the church the election according to grace. Abraham had two sons Ishmael and Isaac. Isaac symbolized Christ as a child of promise born by a miracle.
It is by the child of the free woman Sarah that are the heirs of the promises. The child of the bond woman Hagar was not the heir. It is interesting that no eldest son was ever the heir until Christ. Carnal Israel was never the heir and today the modern nation of Judah is not the heir, Spiritual Israel, the church is the heir and Abraham is the father of the faithful. The reunification of all the tribes of Israel will not happen until Christ returns. From sometime in the first century until today Israel is blinded and it has been the time of the gentiles who by faith and grace, just as Abraham, are grafted into the olive tree which symbolizes the Israel of GOD, spiritual Israel, the church. When asking who is Israel today you must specify which one.

Answering the question, who is Israel today, requires knowledge that there are two Israel’s, one carnal and one spiritual. This is Abrahams two sons. The nation called Israel today is in reality Judah as the northern ten tribes have disappeared from history. This southern kingdom of Judah survived and returned to Jerusalem under Ezra and Nehemiah. The church is spiritual Israel and the Gentiles grafted in become a part of the olive tree. This answers the identity of the 144,000. All Israel is blinded today and it is the time of the gentiles and this blindness remains until Christ returns. Then they will say, blessed is he who comes in the name of YAHWEH.

Let me add that neither the Father nor Jesus has abandoned Israel as some suggest, even the “carnal” Israel you mentioned. Jesus still made it a point to send emissaries to them until his return.

29Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous. 30And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31So you testify against yourselves that you are the sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32Fill up, then,g the measure of the sin of your fathers.33You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape the sentence of hell?

34Because of this, I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and others you will flog in your synagogues and persecute in town after town.35And so upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36Truly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.

Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious.

28Regarding the gospel, they are enemies on your account; but regarding election, they are loved on account of the patriarchs. 29For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.

30Just as you who formerly disobeyed God have now received mercy through their disobedience,31so they too have now disobeyed, in order that they too may now receive mercy through the mercy shown to you.i 32For God has consigned everyone to disobedience so that He may have mercy on everyone.
