SUNDAY – Resurrection Appearances (2) Other Women

And they were saying to one another,

Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” Mark 16:3, English Standard version

March 27th JESUS image.jpg

Action: "Who will roll away the stone?" The women need not have worried for when they arrived at the tomb, they saw the stone had already been rolled away. When they entered they did not see Jesus’ body, but saw two angels. One angel told them not to fear and announced that Jesus had risen. They were instructed to go and tell the other disciples. The women left filled with fear, confusion, and hope. They hesitated and did not immediately tell anyone what they had just witnessed. Along the way, Jesus appeared to them. They fell at His feet and worship him. Jesus tells them to not be afraid, and commanded them to tell the brothers the news. Without any further hesitation, the women found and told the disciples what had happened. Most of the disciples did not believe until later that evening when Jesus appeared to them.

Application:

  • The empty tomb was like the tabernacle’s Holy Place; the slab of rock where Jesus lay, now with angels seated at each end, was a reminder of the angels atop the ark’s mercy- seat. Through his death we have propitiation.

  • For whom did the angel roll the sealed stone away? For Jesus – to let him out? No, but for the women – to let them in! Jesus wants to surprise us with his presence.

  • When we are on a dark road on a thankless task fraught with difficulties, we too may wonder “How will this obstacle be surmounted?“ But the real question is “Who will roll it away?“
