3:1–10 Y’hoshua was clothed in garments covered with dung. Y’hoshua, the cohen hagadol (the high priest) at that time, who represents all of the priests down through the years, will be cleansed through God’s work and placed back in charge of the rebuilt Temple. Then the sin of the land will be removed in a single day (v. 9). The names Y’hoshua and Yeshua are both forms of the name Y’hoshua, used often in ancient times. The Greek equivalent of this name is Jesus.

Verse 4. Take away the filthy garments] The Jews wore sackcloth in times of public calamity; probably the filthy garments refer to this. Let their clothing be changed. I have turned again their captivity; I will fully restore them, and blot out all their iniquities.

3:3–5 Patterned after the consecration of a high priest (Ex 29:1–9; cp. Lv 16:3–5), the forgiveness of sin is vividly portrayed by a change of apparel. The filthy clothes (lit “defiled by excrement”) underscores the gruesome guilt of the people, which had resulted in the severity of God’s judgment. In an unexpected reversal, which could only happen by divine decree, Joshua is vindicated and given clean clothes.

D. Brent Sandy, “Zechariah,” in CSB Study Bible: Notes, ed. Edwin A. Blum and Trevin Wax (Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers, 2017), 1454.

3:3–5. The acquittal took the form of removing Joshua’s filthy clothes, representative of his sin and guilt and that of the nation. Joshua was then clothed with festal or rich garments, speaking of the purity associated with his forgiveness, and a clean turban, possibly suggesting the joy of his reinstatement into the priesthood. This symbolized the forgiveness and restoration of the nation Israel as a priestly nation (cf. Ex. 19:6).
