Under the Old Covenant Law:
  • God commanded LETHAL self-defense: Ex 22.2; But Jesus says “pray” for them: Luke 6.28-29.
  • God commanded “an eye for an eye”: Lev. 24.20; But Jesus says “love your enemies”: Mat 5.38-39
  • God commanded capital punishment: Deut. 22.22; But Jesus offers mercy instead: John 7-8
  • God sometimes even commanded genocides in “holy wars”: Deut. 20.17; But Jesus “rebukes” the sword: Mat 26.52
In 1Cor 9:19-22 Paul says he was not "under the Law," i.e., of Moses but "subject to the Law of Messiah."
So, whose Covenant Law are you subject to?

Jesus said Abraham will be in the kingdom. Abraham will be in the first resurrection. You and I operate in the same faith as Abraham. The gospel was preached to Abraham. Abraham along with everyone else in Hebrews 11 are the root of the olive tree into which you and I were grafted. Abraham was called Gods friend. Abraham was a Christian, part of the church in the wilderness. Abraham fought the kings that took Lot and saved Salem the city of Melchizedek priest of the most high God. Abraham was under the new covenant because he was in Christ by faith before Christ existed seeing it afar off and believed. The new covenant existed before the old was given. Abraham is the father of the faithful in whom all the nations of the Earth will be blessed.

Therefore, faithful Abraham, the father of you and I and all who are of faith, Gods friend, killed the soldiers of the invading army, Abraham did not murder, he killed. The priest of the most high God blessed Abraham, this priest is of the same order as the messiah. This was an act of pure self defense motivated by Abrahams love for Lot and the others who were under threat of death by the invading kings. This was an act of good, to know to do good and do it not is sin. What is good and evil did not change with the new covenant . Actions motivated by love and concern for others to protect them from evil is to love your neighbor as yourself. We should always be of a mind that despises violence and not desiring it but also deal with it praying that God will give us the victory over evil as HE did Abraham.
