Matthew 24:36 This verse says the day and the hour no one knows. People stop there and think that the saints are completely in the dark about the return of Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:4 Here Paul indicates that we are not in darkness so that the return of Christ should surprise us like a thief. What do we make of these two scriptures, was Paul contradicting Jesus ? Actually Paul was making what Jesus said apply to the world not the saints. Jesus also said, Luke 21:34 and Paul said, 1 Thessalonians 5:1-3 , showing that it is people in the world that the day comes as a thief in the night. How then can we know when the time is near ?

From the time the man of sin makes a covenant with ten nations until the return of Jesus is the last prophetic week of Daniels 70 week prophecy. Daniel 9:24-27 This last week, the 70th , is 2520 days, that is 360 x 7 = 2520 . This last week begins when the covenant is made Daniel 9:27 , after 1260 days the man of sin will end the sacrifices and install the abomination of desolation in the holy of holies in the third temple. This begins the great tribulation lasting 1260 days or half of the 2520. Jesus informs us that this tribulation will be cut short, Matthew 24:22 , but by how much will it be shortened ? Daniel 8:14 Christ will cleans or restore the temple or holy place at 2300 days when he returns. So then, 2520 - 2300 = 220 , Christ returns 220 days early. At present we have yet to see the making of this covenant by the man of sin but when we do the return of Christ will be 2300 days afterwards. We will also be able to know when the great tribulation will start, 1260 days into the covenant and then from this point 1040 days to the return of Jesus.
We will know days but not the day and the hour. When we see the two witnesses killed in Jerusalem it will be three and one half days until the first resurrection, Revelation 11:12 , the witnesses rise up into a cloud along with all the elect from righteous Able to whoever is chosen as the last of the 144,000 and another group called the innumerable multitude. In that day while we watch those two witnesses being killed in Jerusalem we will remember the words of Jesus, Luke 21:28 .

It's true that the day of destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was no surprise to Lot and Abraham - Luke 17:29; Genesis 18:17

The day the Deluge started was not a surprise to Noah - Matthew 24:37

In your understanding, are each of the 70 weeks of Daniel's prophecy the same length and do they follow on consecutively from each other?

Can you explain what the third temple is please?

I have a post called “CLUES FROM SOLOMON”. In this post there is much information showing that the antichrist is a Solomon like figure. That 666 is a holy number to the Jewish people. That both Netanyahu and prominent Rabbis are saying Israel will become a world superpower and the plans of the Temple Mount faithful to build the third temple.

2 Thessalonians 2:4 Paul says the man of sin will sit in the temple and say he is God. Since the temple was destroyed in 70 AD then another temple, the third, must exist in the future. The Jews intend to build it.

As for the 70 weeks. There are 70 seven year periods hence seventy sevens, 490 years. These are given in three groups ; a seven week period of 49 years with the decree by Cyrus to rebuild the temple and the city which was under Ezra and Nehemiah , a 62 week period ending with the crucifixion and the final week of 7 years. However there is an obvious gap between the 69 th and 70 th weeks. We know this because of the information about the man of sin, abomination of desolation and great tribulation that has not yet occurred. In Daniel 9:24 it says, to put an end to sin, make atonement and bring in everlasting righteousness, events we know will not happen until Jesus returns. Daniel 9:26 mentions the crucifixion of Jesus. Daniel 9:27 is the final seven or last of the 70 and is 7 years in duration.
So there is a gap from the death of Jesus to the covenant of the man of sin. Matthew 24:4-13 is this gap . The events prove this. The next thing to happen will be the appearance of the man of sin and then we will know the day, not the hour, of the return of Jesus.
