“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” Matthew 5:6.
Food and water deprivation create a strong drive for satisfaction. Gnawing hunger pains become almost impossible to ignore, and thirst for water leaves us weak and faint.
Hunger and thirst for food and water is understandable, but how do we hunger and thirst for righteousness? As with food and water deprivation, we must be aware of our own righteousness deficiency.
The Beatitudes are stair steps toward kingdom lifestyle. We begin with an awareness of our spiritual bankruptcy (poor in spirit), we emotionally respond to our condition (those who mourn), we develop a mindset in response (the meek), and then we long for a solution (hunger and thirst for righteousness). Until we are fully aware of our need, we cannot long for a solution.
Jesus said to the scribes and Pharisees, “It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance” Luke 5:31-32. The religious leaders were the sickest of all spiritually, but they were unaware of their great need. We do not call on the Great Physician until we know how spiritually sick we really are.
The Beatitudes once again call us to assess how great our need is. The blessed life is awareness of the broken life. Until we are emptied of our own self-righteousness, we are not ready for the fullness that only Christ can bring.
Come before Jesus today with your brokenness, poverty, hunger and thirst. He stand ready to help those who are most aware of their great need.
