I always learned that Mary left Elisabeth before the birth of John (Luke 1:56-57).
But it always seemed a bit odd to me that she stayed until just before the birth.
Luke 1: 36: Gabriel tells Mary: this is the sixth month with her. Elisabeth has to be pastthe 26 weeks to be in the sixth month.
Luke 1:39: Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
The journey took a few days (Benson: at least 70 miles).
Luke 1:56: And Mary abode with her about* three months
* [5613: translated as: about, just, namely]
A half year + 1 week to come into the sixth month (26+1= 27) +13 weeks (3 months) = 39 weeks
A pregnancy is 38 weeks, so did Mary stayed until John was born?
Mary calls herself handmaid (Luke 1:38). Greek 1399: doulē. Was she Elisabeths doula?
Did the Virgin Mary serve as Elizabeth's doula? --Aleteia
Isn’t doctor Luke telling us clearly that Mary went to Elisabeth when she was in her sixth month, she stayed with her 3 months and therefore it’s obvious to anyone she stayed until after the birth because a pregnancy is 9 months?
If so Luke starts with another perspective in vers 57. The focus isn’t on Mary anymore (Compare Gen.1:26; 2:4).
