December 1st THE PARABLES
December 1st THE PARABLES
Why Parables?
Why Parables?
This is why I speak to them in these parables; because they go through life witth
their eyes open, but see nothing, and with their ears open,
but understand nothing of what they hear.
Matthew 13:13, J.B. Phillips New Testament

The Greek word parabole means “to place beside.” It is a story that puts the known next to the unknown so that we may learn. Parables feature in the OT and the Jewish rabbis used them often, but Jesus was the greatest exponent of parabolic teaching. At least one-third of Christ’s recorded teaching is found in parables. So, this month we hope to examine one per day, especially from a perspective of grace. |
Purposes and Effectiveness:
- o Abstract ideas can be difficult to grasp; word pictures aid understanding and memory.
- o Parables stir up the thinking, emotions, conscience and action.
- o They can also conceal truths.
Just as light shining on an object creates both clarity and shade, likewise parables can reveal deeper truths and awaken the desire to seek for truth, but also conceal spiritual realities from those with a hardening heart, so exposing their sad spiritual condition. The same sun that melts the ice also hardens the clay. The man who has faith will learn the truth and receive more, while the man who lacks faith will lose even what he thinks he has (Matt 13:10-13).
Helpful Approach:
- a. Study each parable in its context and first century historical setting.
- b. Look for the main truths; avoid seeking a parallel in every detail.
- c. Avoid building a doctrine from a parable. For example, asserting a doctrine of salvation by good works from the parable of the sheep and goats.
- d. Seek to apply the lessons in daily life.
