January 1st THE PSALMS
January 1st THE PSALMS
Today, listen to a few one-minute audio recordings of Psalm 1 from various translations.
Background
For the Lord is great and is highly praised; He is feared above all gods.
Splendour and majesty are before Him; strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.
Psalm 96:4,6, Holman Christian Standard Bible

Purpose? Like many others, I have found the Psalms a source of great comfort and reassurance especially when going through difficult periods or times when God felt distant. The Psalms truly speak to the human heart; leading it from pain → prayer → to praise. God’s grace and Christ’s role underlie this entire book of Hebrew poems, prayers, and praises. John Calvin rightly called Psalms, “An anatomy of all parts of the soul; for no one will find in himself a single feeling of which the image is not reflected in this mirror.” The overall purpose of this penetrating masterpiece is worshipful praise of God.
Music? We have no original score for the music used to accompany many of these Psalms but there have been some attempts to approximate the melodies.
Probing deeper? You may wish to click on the three or four verse citations under discussion for each day which are linked to a webpage containing parallel Hebrew and Greek texts, along with a “commentary” tab referring to Matthew Henry's Whole Bible Commentary. For those who wish to read through the entire book of Palms in January, there is a suggested daily assignment at the top right of each page starting tomorrow.
