Thursday 10-24-24 5th. Day Of The Weekly Cycle, Tishri 20 5785 33rd. Fall Day

Origin of the Seventh-day Sabbath

Saturday 8-19-23 7th. Day Of The Weekly Cycle, Elul 2 5783, 60th. Summer Day Sabbath Shalom/Happy Sabbath Good Morning At the creation of mankind, some 6,000 years ago, we read: "Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the SEVENTH DAY HE RESTED from all his work. And God BLESSED the seventh day and made it HOLY, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done" (Gen.2:1-3, NIV). Notice! Right at the beginning of the creation, when God initially created all mankind (Adam and Eve, our forebears), He also established the seventh-day Sabbath as a "holy" day, and sanctified it by resting upon it. In the original Hebrew calendar, the only calendar mentioned throughout the Bible -- the Word of God -- all the other days of the week have only numbers, not names. Only the seventh day was given a NAME -- the SABBATH. The very word "Sabbath" in Hebrew meant what the day was supposed to be -- a day of "rest, cessation from labor." It literally meant, "rest, to keep as a day of rest; to cease, to desist to leave off; to celebrate the sabbath; to cause to cease; cessation, a ceasing, interruption of work; a week."

Sabbath Given BEFORE Sinai The next mention of the Sabbath in the Word of God occurs in the book of Exodus, the second book of the Bible. After the Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for several hundred years, they had lost the knowledge of the law of God. Their Egyptian overlords had compelled them to work and toil seven days a week, without any respite, to build treasure houses for Pharaoh, and cities. But Almighty God heard the cries of His people, and brought them out of Egypt by a powerful hand and many miracles (Exo.8-12). After humbling the Egyptians by mighty plagues which devastated their land, God brought His nation Israel through the Red Sea and into the wilderness of the desert (Exo.14-15; 16:1).

At this point the Israelites, who had no real faith in God or Moses, His servant, began to grumble and complain, saying, "If only we had died by the Lord's hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death" (Exo.16:3). At this juncture God performed a tremendous series of miracles, to provide food for His people, and to show them once again by mighty proofs, which day of the week was the weekly SABBATH day! Notice! God told Moses, "I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will TEST them and see whether they will follow my instructions. On the SIXTH day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days" (verses 4-5).

The next morning the Israelites found on the desert floor flakes like frost on the ground -- miraculous bread from heaven. The Israelites went out to gather it.
"And when they measured it by the omer, he who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little. Each one gathered as much as he needed" (v.17-18). Some, however, even though Moses commanded them not to save it over till the next day, disobeyed; and that which was kept over was "full of maggots and began to smell" (v.20). Moses rebuked them for their disobedience. The account continues: "Each morning everyone gathered as much as he needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away. On the sixth day, they gathered TWICE as much -- two omers for each person -- and the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses. He said to them, 'This is what the Lord commanded: "Tomorrow is to be a DAY OF REST, A HOLY SABBATH to the LORD [Yehovah]." So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning'" (verses 21-23). This time, when they saved it over till the next morning, it did not breed maggots and stink! Moses then told them, "Eat it today, because TODAY IS A SABBATH to the LORD [Yehovah].

You will not find any of it on the ground today. Six days you are to gather it, but on the SEVENTH DAY, THE SABBATH, there will not be any" (vs.24-25). Nevertheless, some of the people tried to gather it on the Sabbath as well -- and found none anywhere! "Then the Lord said to Moses, 'How long will you refuse to keep my commands and my instructions? Bear in mind that the LORD [Yehovah] has given you THE SABBATH; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where he is on the seventh day; no one is to go out.' So the people RESTED on the seventh day" (verses 28-30). Notice the specific miracles God performed to re-establish in the minds of His people the correct seventh day of rest -- the Sabbath day! 1. He provided manna from heaven by a miracle six days a week. 2. If kept over a second day, He caused it to breed worms and stink.

3. On the sixth day, He provided twice as much as the other five days. 4. That kept over on the seventh day did NOT stink or breed worms! 5. On the seventh day of each week, there was NONE provided! 6. God performed these miracles for FORTY LONG YEARS, without interruption or fail! After this series of miracles, performed for forty long years, whereby God Almighty provided FOOD for His people in the desert do you think there was any QUESTION which day was the weekly Sabbath day of rest for His people? This miracle began on the fifteenth day of the second month (Exo.16:1).

The Sabbath given to Israel was a rest GOD gave them from slavery in Egypt, Deuteronomy 5:15 , and has no connection to Genesis 2:1,2,3 GOD ended HIS work on the 7th day of creation week. There is no record in scripture that anyone kept the Sabbath until GOD made the covenant with Israel. This covenant was not made with the fathers but only with those Israelites who came out of slavery in Egypt. Deuteronomy 5:1,2,3 The new covenant GOD promised to Israel was not like the old covenant HE gave to Moses. Jeremiah 31:31,32,33,34
Hebrews 8:6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13 goes to great lengths to show the inferiority of the old covenant and the new covenants superiority over the old. Under the old no one could draw near unto GOD. The old covenant had fault and that is why the new was needed. The new covenant had better promises than the old covenant. The old is passing away. It is only the church that escapes the old covenant and all other people are yet under the 613 commandments of the law and condemned to death because there is no way they can keep it. Under the law you literally work yourself to death.

The Sabbath of the Ten Commandments was only a physical rest, not spiritual. The new covenant Sabbath is in Christ who freed us from the law of sin and death. Just as the death angel passed over the Israelites because of the blood of the lamb , Jesus our Passover lamb frees us from the laws righteous condemnation to death by shedding his blood . All of these works Israel did were only shadows, not the real substance and Jesus fulfilled the law with GODS agape not by performing its works. Jesus gave two commandments of agape that he said were greater than the Ten Commandments and are actually the only way to fulfill the intent of the law. Many use the old covenant improperly and think that by doing some of its works justifies them. Have you ever noticed that the Ten Commandments never said what happens to someone who breaks them ? The penalty for breaking them is written in the book of the law of Moses. The penalty was almost always death with no mercy shown and impossible to repent. This law of Moses also contains the monthly and annual Sabbaths, the unclean laws, tithing and instructions for all the sacrifices on all the Sabbaths. The entire reason for the Sabbaths was to offer sacrifices, it’s what they did on all these days. The main point of all of this is that Christ fulfilled all this symbolism contained in the law but to continue observing these days and works actually denies this fulfillment. It is like having a mortgage burning party but still continuing to making house payments. It’s like receiving your title from the bank for the car you bought but continue making payments. Its looking forward to something that has actually happened. Law keeping denies the entire work of Christ. You do not hope for what you already have, we have Christ, we don’t look for him to come like the Jews do, he was here and gone and completed the work his FATHER gave him. Anyone living under the law does not have Christ.

Yet, so many believe that a "good Christian" puts up sign containing the 10 Commandments. It is proof of their holiness - not realizing that doing so proves that they don't really know what God's Son did for us. The truth is out there, but so many have never been set free.

The Ten Commandments were the heart of the old covenant. They were designed by YAHWEH to serve as a deterrent to sin, to put the knowledge of good and evil in writing, to testify of the unrighteousness of humanity , to show the need for a savior and as a schoolmaster lead us to the messiah .
