"He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?" Micah 6:8

Balance is a necessary yet somewhat elusive trait for a follower of Christ. We need to be people of prayer, students of the Bible, and servants dedicated to serving others. But it is extremely difficult to maintain balance in these areas.

Micah 6:8 sets forth 3 important balance ideals: out, in, and up. They are as follows:

"Do justice." This is our "out"; our relationship with a hurting world around us. It does not necessarily mean we serve as an advocate in a judicial way, but administrators of justice in the truest sense: sharing the gospel with those lost outside of Christ.

"Love kindness." This is our "in" relationship, primarily with members of the family of God. As Ephesians 4:32 states, "Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you."

"Walk humbly with your God." This is our "up" relationship with our heavenly Father. It does not say, "talk humbly with your God," but rather "walk" humbly with Him. This reminds us of Enoch, who is described in Genesis as walking with God.

These 3 lifestyle essentials can be compared to a 3-legged stool: with any one of the 3 legs missing, it cannot stand. All 3 are key to a balanced and productive life.

Micah 6:8 challenges us to consider: how am I doing justice? In what ways am I loving kindness? Am I walking humbly with my God? May God give us wisdom and insight in balancing these 3 important areas.
