The peer pressure in organized religion is powerful. People want to be deceived where at least they have friends. Having to stand alone requires God's help in making the adjustment, but it really does free people to examine all of scripture rather than the standard Proof-Texts issued by the denomination.
You are describing the dying of the old man so the new man may live. The saints are never alone because they have Yahweh and Christ with them. It is a change in ownership, in association and understanding.
I think only the Spirit can wake up people, but you really need faith to leave such a controlling group on your own. And indeed, help from above.
Diana S , you said help from above. This help is from the HELPER, the Holy Spirit. Just as Jesus is the only name given UNDER HEAVEN by which we can be saved , Acts 4:12 , the Holy Spirit is sent FROM HEAVEN, Acts 1:8 , John 14:26 NKJV . No man can perform in either of these functions but yet there are many who think they can. We need to turn away from them and rely on Yahweh and Christ alone.
If everyone who follows Christ were spiritually mature, that is understandable. The issue is that those who are recently surrendered need to reach maturity. In community with mature followers, they are helped to progress. It is shameful for us that our churches have become businesses with declared unscriptural doctrine and no longer provide truth.
I have an issue right now with a family member who has learned to pray to God for help in her life. There is no place around her where she can be in a community of those whose understanding depends on God's spirit for truth. I cannot just tell her to "go to church" which is the only answer the masses offer. That would be like sending a non-swimmer farther from the shore.
We are only the first fruits of a very small harvest before the second advent. Afterwards is the millennium and second resurrection where many billions more will be added to the kingdom. This is not the only day of salvation. It is each person in the order that Yahweh determines. I have hope for many I have known and know , living and dead, that Yahweh has not and will not forget them.
