Matthew 10:28 is a verse incorrectly translated. The word soul should be spirit because we should know that a soul is the complete person, the nephesh. The verse should be; Do not be afraid of those who can kill the body but cannot kill the spirit. Rather be afraid of the one who can destroy both body and spirit in hell. The spirit is not killed or destroyed at the death of the body, the spirit goes back to God who gave it. The hell mentioned in this verse is the lake of fire, the second death that will destroy the soul, that is body and spirit. When we die the body is indeed dead but the spirit enters a state of total non operation and is not dead or destroyed. The spirit “sleeps “ awaiting a resurrection. In this sense we all, saint and sinner, go to heaven when we die. There are two resurrections, the first is that of the church which is the saints before and after Christ called the elect and the innumerable multitude which is the Laodicean church that is martyred in the tribulation. The human spirit is what contains all of what you are, it is the real you. All your knowledge and memories are in the spirit not the physical brain. The flesh is worthless to God for His will in salvation. In scripture the flesh is not viewed as a positive thing, it is the spirit that has great value to God. It is the spirits of just men made perfect not their flesh. God has a body for each saint already prepared, a body composed totally of spirit like the angels. 2 Corinthians 5:1-5 . John 6:63 When Jesus ascended to heaven he was made a life giving spirit, 1 Corinthians 15:45 , when we ascend into the air to be with him we will be spirit also.
