If it wasn't for the scriptures we wouldn't even have the concept of shunning or even be discussing it now. Just because the Watchtower Corporation abuses this to hide their own sin does not remove it from scripture or nullify it in principle. I agree in part with the video commentate. Shinning is about spiritual purity of the congregation as they stand before God in worship. It does not mean to cut off friends and family like if they were dead in the world. It means that you don't share with them the sacred things that belong to God. We must set ourselves apart. But you still love them and are kind to them in the world. The thing I have noticed a lot is when people are coming out of false religion and or abusive cults they have a tendency to go to the other extremes.
Let me clarify. Let's say, hypothetically, that there is this dude in my congregation who is caught sleeping around with his stepmommy! They both need to be called out for this sin. If they refuse to cut out the hanky panky, then they need to be informed that they are not welcome, and therefore shunned.
Now, say they realize what they are doing is wrong, they repent and wish to fellowship again. Its on them to work at gaining the congregation's trust again.
Meanwhile, in Dubtown, a young lady is caught celebrating at a Christmas party, joining the high school basketball team and watching a Disney movie in the theater. The BORG kicks her out to the curb and so do her parents, shunning her to the point of ZERO interaction. Not only is this stupid, its unbiblical and extremely hurtful.
