Galatians 3:24 How does the law lead us to Christ ? The law is the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The law does not produce life rather it kills. Genesis 2:17 2 Corinthians 3:6 The law gives us the knowledge of sin. Romans 3:20 To know what sin is you must also know what good is. James 4:17 When Adam disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit he and Eve gained the knowledge of good and evil but did not have the ability to always do the good and never do the evil. This is proof that Adam and Eve were not created with the Holy Spirit for if they had been both would have committed the unpardonable sin because they would have with knowledge obeyed Satan rather than God. The two trees also symbolized the old and new covenants; one held everlasting life and the other everlasting death. God wanted Adam to choose between these two trees using his human free will. Adam ate the forbidden fruit because he harkened to the voice of his wife rather than the voice of his God. Adam loved Eve more than God. In doing this Adam lost dominion of Earth to Satan who is now the god of this world. 2 Corinthians 4:4 Now, since Adam brought sin into the world , sin became dominate to the degree that God produced the flood destroying all but those on the ark. This event showed the necessity of giving man a set of laws to regulate and control their behavior through fear of death for its violation. God raised up the carnal nation of Israel and by the hand of Moses gave humanity His law, the Ten Commandments. This law defined good and evil , the knowledge gained by Adam and Eve by free will. God acknowledged their choice but found it necessary to have a written law so that there was no excuse. This law would deter sin by fear of death but by no means would it eradicate sin. The law entered to only make sin even more sinful. Romans 5:20 Israel was to be a model nation to other nations of the tremendous blessings that God would have given any nation that would desire Israel’s God. Deuteronomy 4:5-6 Exodus 12:48 , Numbers 9:14. It was Gods desire to bring all humanity into the law so that when messiah would come then the schoolmaster would bring them to him. However Israel failed miserably in this as they constantly rebelled against God but this did not end Gods desire because the record of ancient Israel recorded in scripture survives and Paul states this desire of God in Romans 11:32. The entire world , Jew and gentile, is condemned to death by the law, Romans 3:19 , Romans 3:9 , Romans 3:23 Even though Israel failed Gods will was done.
Humanity has upon them a double death sentence; one by Adams sin and the other by their own sins under the law. This is the lesson of the schoolmaster; you need a savior. All the benefits provided by the new covenant are not contained in the old therefore the old covenant cannot provide salvation. If the old covenant had been used properly rather than improperly when Jesus came he would have been accepted by millions. Jesus fulfilled all the shadows and symbolism of the old covenant and for anyone to continue in the law is a denial of his redemptive work. The law plainly shows us our inability to keep it if we are honest with ourselves and God. We should love Gods law for the true reason it was given.
