Genesis 1:26 , There are several carnal explanations given to answer the title question. Trinitarians say it is because we are an image of the trinity being body, soul and spirit. In this they have two main errors. There is no trinity and they confuse soul and spirit. The soul is a living being composed of body and spirit. Carnal thinking by Greek pagan translators who were trinitarians view the soul in almost the same way as the spirit. Even in the Strongs concordance there is a dual definition for the word soul. Article G5590 defines soul as “psyche” or breath, referring to the breath of life rather than the true definition in Strongs H5315, “nephesh” a living being, a person. The word soul can only have one meaning not two. This is proof that trinitarians are not only ignorant of who and what God is but what they are as well.

Now to answer the question. The way we are in Gods image and likeness is SPIRIT. GOD IS SPIRIT AND SO ARE WE. What we are is a spirit in a temporary body of flesh and that is why we are mortal. You are not your body. This mortal must put on immortality by shedding the mortal flesh to be further clothed with spirit. The flesh profits nothing. This perishing flesh does not inherit the imperishable. The flesh is our enemy as it is against the desire of the spirit. Galatians 5:17 This is why flesh and blood can inherit the kingdom of God. The problem of sin is in our defiled spirit that we acquired by Adams sin. The Holy Spirit acts as a cleansing agent to remove sin from the spirit thus making us a Christian. This cleansing action remains with us as long as we live in the flesh because whoever says they have no sin is a liar and the truth is not in them. When the Holy Spirit guides and teaches the truth it can overcome any obstacle, even bad translations or deliberate changes in scripture. When the Holy Spirt teaches you, you know it is the truth. This produces the attitude of great confidence making the righteous as bold as a lion. Proverbs 28:1 Hebrews 13:6 Hebrews 10:35-36
God is spirit and now we are only part spirit, but in the kingdom be wholly spirit.
