The Bible verse "faith without works is dead" appears in James 2:20-23 of the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible. The verse includes the following passage:
  • "Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?"
The verse also includes the scripture, "Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God".

The verse explains that Abraham's faith was saved by God, but his actions, or works, demonstrated his faith. James says that Abraham's obedience completed, or "perfected" his faith.

James 2:17-26 KJV. Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

This verse is from the Bible, specifically James 2:21in the King James Version, where it reads: "Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?".

Explanation:

  • "Justified by works":
This means that Abraham's actions, particularly offering Isaac as a sacrifice, demonstrated the genuineness of his faith in God.

  • "Faith wrought with his works":
James is saying that Abraham's faith was not just a passive belief, but actively manifested through his obedience to God's command.

  • "By works was faith made perfect":
This highlights that Abraham's faith was fully realized and proven through his actions.
Key takeaway: This verse is often used to emphasize the importance of not only having faith, but also putting that faith into practice through good works.

The Offering of Isaac (John 3:1–21) 1 Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he answered. 2 “Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”
