There is no wisdom, nor understanding,

nor counsel to oppose Yahweh.

Harris, W. H., III, Ritzema, E., Brannan, R., Mangum, D., Dunham, J., Reimer, J. A., & Wierenga, M. (Eds.). (2012). The Lexham English Bible (Pr 21:30). Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press.

21:30 to oppose Yahweh All human wisdom is frail and useless before Yahweh and His wisdom.

The book of Proverbs promotes human wisdom and considers it worthwhile for righteousness (Prov 11:14; 15:22; 20:18). However, it puts human wisdom in proper perspective: It is only found in the fear of Yahweh and it is always subject to God’s higher wisdom (1:7; 20:24).

30, 31. Men’s best devices and reliances are vain compared with God’s, or without His aid (Pr 19:21; Ps 20:7; 33:17).

30 The verse underscores the superiority of the Lord to human wisdom, despite its cleverness, even its good intentions (such as “fear of the Lord”). Whybray objects to the translation “against” (לנגד) and insists on “face to face,” but this is not necessary. The real point is that human wisdom, though it be a gift of God (Prov 2:6), comes up short. The idea is not unrelated to Prov 3:5 and 15:33;

No matter how carefully leaders make plans, they need to recognize that God has the last word. The principle applies in particular when it comes to the king’s key role as commander in chief, in making plans for war (vv. 30, 31). Conversely, he needs to recognize that wisdom on the part of an attacker can count for more than the mere strength of his fighting force and the defenses of his city.
