32:3–12 Remembering Esau’s death threats from twenty years earlier (27:41–42), Jacob now made a special effort to gain Esau’s favor with the assistance of messengers. The first prong of his strategy was verbal: Jacob had the messengers call Esau lord and himself your servant, thus honoring Esau’s position as firstborn—even though he had previously taken Esau’s birthright and blessing. Jacob also made sure he was the first to initiate contact between the brothers, in order to seek Esau’s favor.

To prepare for the coming confrontation with his brother, Jacob did two things: first, he divided his group in two so at least some of his people could escape if necessary; second, he offered a prayer with three elements: an admission that he was unworthy of the many blessings God had given him, a prayer for rescue, and a reminder of God’s promises to prosper and multiply Jacob.

This is about the verse before verse 10 but I thought it was key.

9 Then Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Yahweh, who said to me, ‘Return to your land and to your family, and I will deal well with you.’ 10 I am not worthy of all the loyal love and all the faithfulness that you have shown your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. 9. Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham—In this great emergency, he had recourse to prayer. This is the first recorded example of prayer in the Bible. It is short, earnest, and bearing directly on the occasion. The appeal is made to God, as standing in a covenant relation to his family, just as we ought to put our hopes of acceptance with God in Christ. It pleads the special promise made to him of a safe return; and after a most humble and affecting confession of unworthiness, it breathes an earnest desire for deliverance from the impending danger. It was the prayer of a kind husband, an affectionate father, a firm believer in the promises.

10 Jacob’s earnestness is shown in his address to God. He invokes the “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Lord,” almost the same as the Lord’s self-disclosure at Bethel (28:13). But usually such lengthy titles are avoided in human speech about God (cf. 28:20). By using this full title, Jacob seeks to recall all that God has done for his father and grandfather. Then he reminds the Lord that his present predicament is the result of obeying the divine command. “Return to your country and your clan” is an almost exact quote from 31:3 with the final clause “that I may be with you” paraphrased as “that I may do good for you.”
