4:30 do not grieve the Holy Spirit Paul seems to be indicating that poor treatment of others can constrain the work of the Spirit—essentially denying or resisting God’s indwelling presence (compare Isa 63:10).

Grieving the Holy Spirit

As Paul lists several issues of conduct to avoid as believers in Eph 4:25–32, he interjects a warning: “do not grieve (lypeō) the Holy Spirit of God by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption” (Eph 4:30). These words are unanticipated by the preceding verses, adding to the difficulty of interpreting what it means to “grieve” the Spirit. Although Acts cautions against “resisting” the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51), and Paul tells the Thessalonians not to “quench” the Spirit (1 Thess 5:19), the notion of “grieving” the Holy Spirit is not found elsewhere in the nt.

As most commentators point out, however, the ot contains similar language that likely serves as the background to Eph 4:30. Psalm 106:33, for example, says that Israel made God’s Spirit bitter when they rebelled at Meribah, and Moses sinned against God (compare Num 20:10). According to Isaiah 63:9–14, God’s people rebelled and “grieved” the Holy Spirit. Although the Septuagint uses the Greek word paroxynō rather than lypeō to translate the Hebrew atsav, in both Isaiah and Eph 4:30, “grieving” the Holy Spirit is associated with an inappropriate response to God’s “redemption” of His people (compare lytroō in lxx Isa 63:9 to apolytrōsis in Eph 4:30). This background shapes how many commentators understand Eph 4:30, though they offer various interpretations of the precise meaning of “grieving” within the context of Ephesians. Ultimately, “to grieve” the Spirit seems to be the opposite of Paul’s exhortation in Eph 4:3 to “maintain” the unity of the Spirit.

In his lengthy excursus on “The Sin against the Spirit,” Barth concludes that the phrase may simply be synonymous with “sinning against the Spirit” (as in Mark 3:28–30; Acts 5:3, 9; 7:51). He argues that Eph 4:30 contains a motivation for all the other warnings and exhortation in the section: To sin against the Spirit hinders the work of unity being promoted in the latter half of Ephesians.
