NET Bible 1 Thessalonians 4:16

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a shout

of command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet

of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary

16. himself—in all the Majesty of His presence in person, not by deputy.

descend—even as He ascended (Ac 1:11).

with—Greek, "in," implying one concomitant circumstance attending His appearing.

shout—Greek, "signal shout," "war shout." Jesus is represented as a victorious King, giving the word of command to the hosts of heaven in His train for the last onslaught, at His final triumph over sin, death, and Satan (Re 19:11-21).

the voice of … archangel—distinct from the "signal shout." Michael is perhaps meant (Jude 9; Re 12:7), to whom especially is

committed the guardianship of the people of God (Da 10:13).

trump of God—the trumpet blast which usually accompanies God's

manifestation in glory (Ex 19:16; Ps 47:5); here the last of the three accompaniments of His appearing: as the trumpet was used to convene God's people to their solemn convocations (Nu 10:2, 10; 31:6), so here to summon God's elect together, preparatory to their

glorification with Christ (Ps 50:1-5; Mt 24:31; 1Co 15:52).

shall rise first—previously to the living being "caught up." The "first"

here has no reference to the first resurrection, as contrasted with that of "the rest of the dead." That reference occurs elsewhere (Mt 13:41, 42, 50; Joh 5:29; 1Co 15:23, 24; Re 20:5, 6); it simply stands in opposition to "then," 1Th 4:17. FIRST, "the dead in Christ" shall rise, THEN the living shall be caught up. The Lord's people alone are spoken of here.

NET Bible Isaiah 2:1-4

Here is the message about Judah and Jerusalem that was revealed

to Isaiah son of Amoz. In the future the mountain of the LORD's temple will endure as the most important of mountains, and will be

the most prominent of hills. All the nations will stream to it, many peoples will come and say, "Come, let us go up to the LORD's mountain, to the temple of the God of Jacob, so he can teach us his

requirements, and we can follow his standards." For Zion will be the center for moral instruction; the LORD will issue edicts from Jerusalem. He will judge disputes between nations; he will settle cases for many peoples. They will beat their swords into

plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nations will not take up the sword against other nations, and they will no longer train for war.

Micah 4:1-4 The Mountain of the Lord's Temple

1And it will come about in the last days That the mountain of the

house of the LORD Will be established as the chief of the

mountains. It will be raised above the hills, And the peoples will

stream to it. 2Many nations will come and say, "Come and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD And to the house of the God of Jacob, That He may teach us about His ways And that we may walk

in His paths." For from Zion will go forth the law, Even the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.…3And He will judge between many

peoples And render decisions for mighty, distant nations. Then they

will hammer their swords into plowshares And their spears into

pruning hooks; Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And

never again will they train for war. 4Each of them will sit under his vine And under his fig tree, With no one to make them afraid, For the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken.…6"In that day,"

over them in Mount Zion From now on and forever.…

waste, without man and without beast," that is, in the cities of Judah

and in the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate, without man and

without inhabitant and without beast, 11the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who say, "Give thanks to the LORD of hosts, For the LORD is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting"; and of those who bring a thank offering into the house of the LORD. NET Bible Zechariah 14:1

A day of the LORD is about to come when your possessions will be

divided as plunder in your midst.-On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives which lies to the east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in half from east to west, leaving a great valley. Half the mountain will move northward and the other half southward.-All the land will change and become like the Arabah from Geba to Rimmon, south of Jerusalem; and Jerusalem will be raised up and will stay in its own place from the Benjamin Gate to

the site of the First Gate and on to the Corner Gate, and from the

Tower of Hananel to the royal winepresses.-And people will settle there, and there will no longer be the threat of divine extermination--

Jerusalem will dwell in security. -Then all who survive from all the nations that came to attack Jerusalem will go up annually to worship the King, the LORD who rules over all, and to observe the

Feast of Tabernacles.-But if any of the nations anywhere on earth refuse to go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD who rules over all, they will get no rain.-Every cooking pot in Jerusalem and Judah will become holy in the sight of the LORD who rules over

all, so that all who offer sacrifices may come and use some of them

to boil their sacrifices in them. On that day there will no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the LORD who rules over all.

Heaven Texts

NET Bible 1 Peter 1:3,4

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, that is, into an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven for you,

Reserved in heaven for you - Margin, "us." The difference in the text and the margin arises from the various readings in mss. The common reading is "for you." The sense is not materially affected. The idea is, that it is an inheritance appointed for us, and kept by one who can make it sure to us, and who will certainly bestow it upon us. Compare the

Matthew 25:34 note; John 14:2 note; Colossians 1:5 note.

Colossians 1:5 NET Bible

Your faith and love have arisen from the hope laid up for you in heaven, which you have heard about in the message of truth, the gospel

laid up for you in heaven] See for a close parallel, 1 Peter 1:4; and cp.

Hebrews 11:16; Hebrews 13:14.

“In heaven:”—lit., in the heavens; as often in N.T. On this plural see our note on Ephesians 4:10. The hope is “laid up” there, because He who is its Essence (1 Timothy 1:1; cp. below Colossians 1:27) is there, “sitting at the right hand of God” (below, Colossians 3:1); and our final enjoyment of it, whatever the details of locality may prove to be, whatever e.g. be the destiny of this earth with regard to the abode of the Blessed, will take place under the full manifestation of His presence in heavenly glory. See our Lord’s own words, Matthew 6:20-21; Luke

12:34; Luke 18:22; John 14:3; John 17:24.

2 Corinthians 5:1,2 NET Bible

For we know that if our earthly house, the tent we live in, is dismantled, we have a building from God, a house not built by human hands, that is eternal in the heavens. For in this earthly house we groan, because we desire to put on our heavenly

dwelling,

in the heavens] These words should be joined with ‘we have,’ not as is usually done with ‘eternal.’ There is a difficulty here. The new body is said in 1 Corinthians 15:52; Php 3:21; 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 to be given us at the coming of Christ. The condition of the believer between death and the judgment is represented as a sleep. The explanation is that we possess our future body already in the mind and will of God. So the Hebrew prophets frequently speak of a future event as’ past, because it is already decreed in the providence of God. We are in said to ‘have it in the heavens’ because its organization and communication to us are not natural, but heavenly and spiritual.
