General Can a horse trump a theologian in exhibiting "empathy"?

Animal husbandry is a fascinating subject. How much "information" does a horse need to be transmitted from a human before its capable of exhibiting what seems like "compassion"? Conversely, how much religious dogma is required to drive radical affection and emotional availability in humans?

Our family dog lays down next to my wife and trys to comfort her when she's sick. Some animals know when humans are ill. It's definitely a loving trait. Its alot more loving than the fire breathing Baptist preacher down the road from us.
