No angel can be “the seed” of woman or man, “begotten,” “raised up,” etc.
  • “The seed” of a human: Gen 3:15; 2Sam 7;
  • God will “raise up”: Deut. 18.15-22; Jer. 23:5-6; 30:9; Isa. 49.5 LXX
  • “The Lord formed me from the womb”: Isa 49:5LXX;
  • A descendant, from the family line of David: Ps 132:11-12;
  • Called a “shoot,” Isa. 11.10.
Lastly, the Hebrew definite article cannot be employed in the construct with the proper name, i.e., ha malak YHWH. Therefore, malak YHWH is a title designating any messenger of God, human (Hag 1.13; Mal 2.7; cp. 2Es 1.40) or non-human.
  • YHWH distinguished from the angel of the Lord: Gen 16:11; 21:17; 2Sam 24:15-16; 2K 19:35; 1Chr 21:14-30; 2Chr 32:20-22; Isa 37:36; Judg 13:16.
  • The phrase appears without the article more than 20 times in the LXX;
  • In the NT "the angel of the Lord" appears once: Matt. 1:24 ὁ ἄγγελος κυρίου.
