NIV: New International Version
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

AMPC: Amplified Bible Classis Edition
And we know (understand, recognize, are conscious of, by observation and by experience) and believe (adhere to and put faith in and rely on) the love God cherishes for us. God is love, and he who dwells and continues in love dwells and continues in God, and God dwells and continues in him.

I realize that, to most people, the word "love" is not really understood the same way as during the first century A.D. The interlinear text - written in Greek - is agape. However, there is a synonym based on usage that adds a lightly different color: phileo. Typically we call that "brotherly love." I think most people see that as a "stronger" love. I think not - brotherly love indicates a knowledge of a person while agape speaks to possible not even knowing the person. I think of it as a love given to us spiritually. I can "agape" a person because the person is a human being whom Yahweh gave life to. It is a human regard for a person whom God placed in a womb. This verse tells me that Yahweh cares about it because we exist - even though He also knows us. Warts and all.

Agape is a love that only GOD is. Humans do not by nature have this love but it is given to the saints by the Holy Spirit , Romans 5:5. This agape is how Christ fulfilled the law. Romans 13:10 The Ten Commandments said “thou shalt not “ but the two greatest commandments Jesus gave are “thou shalt” Matthew 22:37,39 KJV.
This is why of faith, hope and love , love is the greatest . 1 Corinthians 13:13 Without agape we are nothing.

When a christian friend starts to shun another christian friend because she or he is starting to research and interpret Bible parts differently, where is the christian love? Surely there must be room to agree to disagree.
I read once that only a cult can divide and tear apart people who love each other.
When a person can only love another if they believe the same, than this is based on conditional, shallow love. So I guess God cannot dwell in such a person really can He?

When Jesus said to agape your neighbor as yourself he was referring to anyone and everyone. The golden rule is also based on agape; do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Jesus said, “as the FATHER loves me so I have loved you.” Jesus and his FATHER had the same exact agape and in this way Jesus was the express image of his FATHER. Jesus demonstrated agape to us. Jesus revealed his FATHER to us and in agape Jesus told Philip, if you have seen me you have seen the FATHER. Agape cannot sin or be tempted by evil. This is why it was impossible for Jesus to sin. True agape is not just words but also deeds just as faith without works is dead. True faith or agape is by the Holy Spirit working in us and we are GODS workmanship. Isaiah 26:12 Philippians 2:13 Ephesians 2:10
