JESUS’ FINAL WEEK

SUNDAY – Resurrection Appearances (1) Mary Magdalene

Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned around and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni” (which means “Teacher”).

John 20:16, Lexham English Bible

Action: Here is a possible sequence of Jesus‘ five resurrection appearances on that Sunday:

Harmonizing the accounts of the first two resurrection sightings can be problematic (scroll to series of maps), but here is a likely scenario: Mary Magdalene was on her way with at least three other women to anoint Jesus‘ body with spices bought after 6 p.m. the previous evening (Mark 16:1-3). As they neared the tomb, they noticed the heavy entrance stone had been moved by an angel. While Mary quickly left to alert Peter and John, the other women entered the tomb and encountered angels - one proclaimed that the Lord had risen. They ran to the other disciples, possibly staying separately in Bethany two miles away. Peter and John arrived, entered the tomb and then left. But Mary stayed behind, weeping outside. She turned around and saw the Saviour who used her name.

Application:

Mary did not understand everything but was eager to believe and obey. Jesus honoured her childlike faith by appearing to her first and entrusting her with the first message witnessing to his resurrection – at a time when Jewish women were not used as witnesses in a courtroom.

Jesus said to her, “Mary.” “He calls his own sheep by name ... and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.” Sadly, many leave the control of a religious hierarchy only to listen to the voice of other strangers (John 10:3-5, 19-21).

Women were not shown respect by being allowed to testify in court back then. Wow. Jesus certainly certainly overturned that table. Thanks for bringing that out Jim :)
